Jul 03, 2017 · The stock turbo on the EA888 Gen3 2.0t engine thats in the MK7 GTI is the IHI IS20, the Golf 1.8t has the IS12 and the R 2.0t has the IS38. Previously VW used a lot of Borg Warner turbos but with the MK7 they have switched to IHI. Think of the IHI IS20 as the Borg Warner K03 and the IS38 as a K04. Would be nice to get some actual confirmation on this stuff, but seeing as how quite a few modern performance 4 cyl turbo engines are usually hitting rod issues at around 350ft lbs of torque, I would imagine we are safe with the Gen 3 stuff since to get over 350ft lbs you'd be looking at big turbos vs the IS20 and IS38 stuff. Replace the Turbo on your Golf R / S3 or upgrade to this larger unit from your other MQB factory turbo. OEM built by the VW/Audi Group this is the latest revision of the IS38. Fits all MQB vehicles.
